After releasing over 40 films and cementing themselves as the new home for horror, Blumhouse Productions is finally making a feature film with a female director. Sophia Takal (Green, Always Shine) will helm a reboot of Black Christmas. The 1974 Bob Clark slasher film follows a group of sorority girls over the holidays, where they are stalked by a mysterious killer.

Tree Makes the Wrong Choice in Happy Death Day 2U
Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of finally being able to check out Happy Death Day 2U, the sequel to one of my favorite movies from 2017. I was excited to see how the film was going to revisit the Groundhog’s Day horror premise, especially because it was advertised as being “different” than expected. Overall, it was solid, if not as good as the first, but Jessica Rothe, who plays Tree, has fantastic facial expressions and sold the movie for what it was.
I was with the film for most of the ride … most of it.
**Spoilers for Happy Death Day 2U.**

Jason Blum Looking at Rebooting Scream, So Please Get a Female Director
Following a smash success in rebooting (sort of) the Halloween franchise, it makes sense that Blumhouse would look to some other popular horror properties for possible remakes and reboots. One of the most iconic slasher sagas is the Scream franchise, which ended with Scream 4 in 2011. The franchise features one of horror’s best final girls, Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell), and some decently sharp commentary on both the commodification of female trauma and, in an unfairly maligned third film, the Hollywood machine.

Things We Saw Today: Blumhouse Finally Hires a Female Director
Blumhouse Television’s new Hulu series “Into the Dark” is providing an unique opportunity for genre directors to produce new work. The anthology horror series launched in October, with the plan to have a new entry released each month tied to a holiday. However, unlike other anthology series, each episode is actually feature-length, which means that Blumhouse is producing one new horror movie every month. October’s Halloween-centric “The Body” allowed director Paul Fisher to expand on his short film of the same name, while cult genre filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo’s Christmas-centric “Pooka!” premiered today to rave reviews.
The next entry in the series, IndieWire has learned, comes from a filmmaker familiar from the festival circuit: Sophia Takal, the director of “Green” and “Always Shine,” helmed the all-female horror movie “New Year New You” for the series. The 85-minute feature will premiere on Hulu on December 28.
The all-female cast includes “Assassination Nation” and “The Bad Batch” star Suki Waterhouse, in addition to Carly Chaikin (“Mr. Robot”), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (“Killing Eve”), and Melissa Bergland (“Winners & Losers”). The plot centers on a group of old high school friends who reunite in a house for New Year’s Eve, where they’re forced to confront traumas from their past.
